Family Fun in the Surrey Hills
Chloe aka ThatHolidayMum came to stay with her family at Barnett Hill. Read what she thought of her stay on the Hill.
I had a good feeling about our weekend exploring the Surrey Hills as soon as we pulled up to Barnett Hill. The beautiful building and grounds were bathed in Spring sunshine and my toddler had just napped for the entire two hour journey!
Our first stop was lunch and not only were we presented with a ‘colour-me-in’ menu but also plastic plates and cutlery for my little boy. I could feel my shoulders dropping and it made me feel so at ease knowing the wonderful team just “got it” when it came to family holidays – the little details make such a huge difference. After lunch we checked into our room, which was set in the Courtyard of the hotel. The huge tub, in-room dining table and bags of play space were set off by Temple Spa products and a welcome platter of fruit. Tick, tick, tick.
Neither my husband nor I had been to the Surrey Hills before, so that afternoon we set off to Winkworth Arboretum – around 15 minutes’ drive from the hotel. There were three loops you could take around the Arboretum, from a fully accessible 1 hour walk to a more off track 2 hours. We took the middle route round the beautiful lake and of course ended up in the play park.
We headed back to the hotel for a late afternoon glass of fizz and for little man to run off the last of his energy in the grounds. He tried his hand at the outdoor chess, but only got so far as shouting “HORSEY” at the Rook!! Dinner in the restaurant starts at 6:30pm, which was a little late for us, but it didn’t matter as we had room service at the dinner table in our room which was just perfect.
After a great night’s sleep {for all three!} and a full English breakfast, we took one last lap of the grounds and said goodbye to the hotel.
The sun was still shining so we drove about 25 minutes to family friendly RHS Wisley and had the best day. There are four cafes, stunning gardens and grounds for picnics and a great adventure playground which could have taken up hours if we had them to spare. Sadly, we didn’t, but we were so impressed with the Surrey Hills that we will definitely be back.
